Tutorial for Historical Player FaceGen Project.
What you will need

1.A source of real player photos, or multiple sources.
a. To start off I recommend downloading Pegasus27’s batters and pitchers compilation files located at http://www.filefront.com/user/pegasus27. I also recommend downloading any or all of the photopacks located on PadresFans Mods http://web.mac.com/sixwilsons/PFMPortal ... bsite.html
b.There is no guarantee that you will find an adequate photo in these packs. You may want to use a picture from Ebay, Google Images or another source entirely. Don’t forget to also seach the OOTP mods forum under T_will/Gambo photopack to find other pictures that may not be included in these photopacks.

2.The program to create FG player images located at http://download.cnet.com/FaceGen-Modell ... 70325.html

3.OOTP11.
You will want to extract all of the available photos to your hard drive and install the FaceGen Modeller on your computer.

What players should you do?
1.For the Historical Face Gen project we have created a master list of the 17k+ historical players. We will be working from this list.
a.The list is sorted by career games played. These amounts have been adjusted for starting and relief pitchers.

2.Participants will be given three options for how players are assigned to them.
a.Option 1 - By Amount –This participant is assigned a group of unassigned players starting from the top. The minimum will be 20 and the maximum will be 50 at a time.
b.Option 2 – By Group – The participant chooses a specific group of players such as the 1977 Cincinnati Reds or a group of certain players. The participant will give us the list they wish to do and we will assign those not selected to the participant.

c.Option 3 – By Era/Amount – The participant wished to work from a certain era such as pre-1900. We will give them the list of the next 20-50 players who are currently unassigned falling into that category.
3.Each participant will be given a certain amount of time to complete the assignment. If they are not completed by this time we will remove the assignment from them and their selection will reenter the pool of unassigned players.

4.Once completed the participant will send the finalized .fg images to us and we will add them to the collection
a.Only the images the participant is assigned will be included in the collection

The Review Process
1.We will review the provided images to ensure they meet the standards we ask. If they are not up to the standard they will be removed from the collection or overwritten when a better option is provided.

2.We will also have a portion of the forum dedicated to participants who wish to provide better images than what has previously been provided. *We will expand on this process at a later date.

Creating Face Gen Images (Outside of OOTP11)
1.Once you install FG, open it up and look for the "PhotoFit" tab along the top right of the screen and click on it.

2.Click the "Next" button at the bottom right of the "Step 1" screen. On the "Step 2" screen, click the top "Load" button (for frontal image)

3.Navigate to your photo set and open a photo. Once it's loaded, click the "Next" button at the bottom of the screen.

4.Click and drag the little green crosshairs to position them over the player's face.

-The top 2 middle points should go over the pupils.
-The top 2 outside points should go on either side of his head about even with his eyes level with the middle of the ear.
-The 2 upper middle points should go on either side of the base of his nose, even with his nostrils.
-The 2 lower middle points should go on either corner of his mouth.
-The bottom 2 outside points should go on either side of his face, even with his mouth on the curve of the jaw.
-The bottom middle point should go down at the lowest tip of his chin.
*The points need to be set on the “face” of the player, place them as close to the edge as possible without being outside of the face. Keep in mind that excess shadow may prevent the point from being read correctly. (You will receive an error). In this case move the point slightly closer in

After setting these, click the "Next" button. The next screen is just a close-up version of the previous screen that lets you adjust your points as needed. Click "Next" again.

5.On the "Step 4" screen, leave the "Preserve facial hair..." box checked and then click "Start Now". This process will take 2-5 minutes to complete depending on the speed of your computer.

6.Once the photo is generated, click the "File" dropdown in the upper left and then click "Save" (Do NOT click "Save Image", though). Name the file using the following convention: firstname_lastname.fg (It will save it as an .fg file by default)

NOTE: If the resulting pic is obviously flawed, please don't add it to the collection. Either go back and try re-generating it or move on to another one. Unfortunately, some photos just don't work. You may need to find a different photo of the player.
What types of images should you be using?
1)Direction
a.The source picture should be one that is the player facing forward with as little obstruction or angle preventing the full face from being seen as possible.

2)Quality of Image
a.If possible you should use a high-resolution picture of the player, however, in many cases a low resolution picture will work just as well

3)Color
a.A color picture would be best, however the FG program does allow the use to adjust the color of the model. If off, adjust the color to appear as realistic as possible

4)Age of Picture
a.Any age will work, however, for the purpose of the historical facepack project we are asking that the picture be as close to 28 years old as possible, leaning towards younger
i.The game will allow for the player to age over time. At about 28 years old the player is at the most “recognizable” age
.
5)Facial Expression
a.If possible do not use a picture where the player is smiling or making another abnormal expression . Your import will be the base image of the player and the game will change the player’s mood according to his status in game.
i.If the player is smiling on import and becomes “happy” in game this will often result in the player having anomalies such as two sets of teeth.

6)Facial Hair
a.The modeler when selected does import facial hair as part of the image. For the purpose of the historical face pack project we a asking you choose a picture with as little facial hair as possible. Facial hair can be added to the in-game image at will.
1. For example, Rollie Fingers is known for his mustache. If you create the face gen model using a source without the mustache the basic image will be sans mustache. His trademark mustache can be added in-game at will. If the model is with the mustache it cannot be removed *The mustache is part of bobbleheads facial hair mod.

7)Accessories
a.Only use source images that include common accessories for the player. Prescription glasses, yes, sunglasses, no. If possible choose an image that omits these.
i.The face gen modeler will include these as they are part of the source image. However , these will be an inseparable part of the ”face” and may not appear correctly. Take extra care with the results of using these accessories.

Importing into OOTP11
1)Copy your completed .fg files into the fg_files directory of the game. When creating a league these files will automatically be imported for the selected player.

I just wanted to add two addendums to this tutorial...

1) If you want to do a certain team or group of guys. Go ahead and post the list or team and we will respond with the final list for you. Do not feel limited.

2) For players who had facial hair for only a portion of their career, you can use a picture of them with the hair if nothing else is available and de-select the "preserve facial hair". This will do a good job of removing the hair. Just make sure you re-select it when doing the next guy. If he had facial hair pretty much his whole career you can do the face gen with hair.
